Yarn export exceeds pre-pandemic levels

Yarn export in October could not hit the peak of June 2021, but have been hovering above the pre-pandemic levels since March 2021 while fibre exports mirrored the trend. In October 2021, basic textiles comprising fibres, spun and filament yarns shipment were worth US$827 million or INR6,100 crore, accounting for about 2.3% of total merchandise exported from India during the month.

Cotton Export

Cotton shipment in October, the first month on the 2021-22 marketing season, was at 4.10 lakh bales worth INR1,035 crore or US$140 million. However, it was 40% lower than the volume exported in October 2020 while total value realization fell 18% as the average export price jumped 37% YoY. It can be recalled that total export in 2020-21 marketing season was at 109 lakh bales worth US$24,870 crore or US$3,420 million. In October, Bangladesh was the largest importer of Indian cotton, followed by Vietnam, Indonesia, China, and Oman.

Export price realisation for cotton averaged INR148 a kg or US cents 91.38 per pound in October. This was much below Cotlook A index, the global spot price benchmark and the domestic spot price for benchmark Gujarat Shankar-6. During the month, Cotlook averaged US$119 per pound while Shankar-6 was at US cents 103 per pound.

All Yarn Export

Spun yarns shipment totaled 141 million kg worth US$526 million or INR3,880 crore. The unit value realization of all types of spun yarn averaged US$3.73 per kg, about US$1.08 up year on year. Bangladesh was the largest imported of spun yarns during the month, followed by China and Peru.

Cotton yarn export

Cotton yarn export was at 112 million kg worth US$435 million (INR3,210 crore). These were shipped to 73 countries at an average price of US$3.88 a kg, up US cents 2 from previous month and up US$1.17 from October 2020. Bangladesh was the top importer of cotton yarn, followed by China, Peru, Egypt and Portugal.

Non-cotton yarn export

100% man-made fibre yarns exports were at 10.54 million kg, comprising over 5.85 million kg of polyester yarn, 2.30 million kg of viscose yarn and 2.14 million kg of acrylic yarn. Viscose yarn was worth US$8 million or INR61 crore were exported at an average price of US$3.58 per kg in October. The major market was Bangladesh, followed by Turkey, Belgium, Brazil and Sri Lanka. Polyester spun yarns export was worth US$14 million exported at average unit price of US$2.46 a kg. Brazil was the largest importer of polyester yarn, followed by Turkey and USA.

Blended yarn export

Blended spun yarns worth US$60 million were exported in October, including 12 million kg of PC yarns and 4 million kg of PV yarns. Bangladesh was the largest importers of PC yarn from India followed by Egypt while Turkey was the single largest importer of PV yarns from India followed by Vietnam.

Filament export

All kinds of filament yarns shipment totaled 65 million kg, valued at US$122 million or INR896 crore.
