Yarn export again driven by surge in prices in March

In March 2022, basic textiles comprising fibres, spun and filament yarns shipment were worth US$955 million or INR7,165 crore, accounting for just over 2% of total merchandise exported from India during the month. Compared to a year ago, they were down 18% both in INR and US$ terms. In same comparison, the INR depreciated over 3% against the US$. For 2021-22, exports were worth US$12 billion up 64% from 2020-21. However, the base year value was low due to COVID restrictions.

Spun yarns shipment totaled 129 million kg worth US$569 million or INR4,569 crore. The unit value realisation of all types of spun yarn averaged US$4.42 per kg, about US$1.11 up year on year. Bangladesh was the largest market for spun yarns during the month, followed by Turkey and Egypt. In 2021-22, spun yarn exports totaled US$6.7 billion up 80% from 2020-21. Nevertheless, the jump is attributed to the low base year value due to COVID restrictions.

Cotton yarn exports

Cotton yarn export was at 98 million kg worth US$466 million (INR3,500 crore). Volume shipment was down 4% year on year, while revenue earning jumped 31% is US$ term. These were shipped to 71 countries at an average price of US$4.74 a kg, up US cents 7 from previous month and up US$1.29 from March 2021. Bangladesh was the top importer of cotton yarn, followed by Egypt, China, Turkey and Portugal. China reduced its import from India by 3/5th but ranked third in March 2022. In 2021-22, cotton yarn exports totaled US$5.5 billion up 85% from 2020-21, due to a low base year value amid COVID restrictions.

Man-made yarn exports

100% man-made fibre yarns exports were at 15.00 million kg, comprising over 8.50 million kg of polyester yarn, 3.10 million kg of viscose yarn and 3.23 million kg of acrylic yarn. Viscose yarn worth US$13 million or INR97 crore were exported at an average price of US$4.17 per kg in March. The major market was Bangladesh, followed by Turkey, Italy, Portugal, and USA. Polyester spun yarns export worth US$22 million was exported at average unit price of US$2.61 a kg. Brazil was the largest importer of polyester yarn, followed by Turkey and Morocco.

Blended yarn export

Blended spun yarns worth US$56 million were exported in March, including 7.40 million kg of PC yarns and 6 million kg of PV yarns. Bangladesh was the top importers of PC yarn from India followed by Honduras while Turkey was the single largest importer of PV yarns from India followed distantly by Vietnam.

Filament exports

All kinds of filament yarns shipment totaled 61 million kg, worth US$127 million or INR955 crore.
