Spun yarn export slips for the fifth month in September 2024
Spun yarn export were down year on year for the fifth straight month during September 2024. During the month, shipment of basic textiles comprising all fibres, spun and filament yarns were worth US$509 million or INR4,225 crore, accounting for 1.7% of total merchandise exported from India during the month or 20% of the official total data.
Data covered in this report is collated from nearly 90 ports handling textile products (Air, Sea, Road& ICDs).
Spun yarns export totaled 119 million kg worth US$363 million or INR3,012 crore in September 2024, down 14% year on year. The unit value realization of all types of spun yarn averaged US$3.06 per kg. Bangladesh was the largest importer of spun yarns during the month, followed by China and Peru. Exports to Bangladesh inched up 3% from a year ago while those to China slumped 71% and that to Peru doubled.
Cotton yarn export was at 93 million kg worth US$294 million (INR2,440 crore). Volume shipment was down 21% year on year, while revenue earnings plunged 21% in US$ term. These were shipped to 69 countries at an average price of US$3.15 a kg, up US cent 1 from August 2024. Bangladesh was the top importer of cotton yarn, followed by China, Peru, Vietnam and Colombia. China’s imports of Indian cotton yarn during the month fell 72% while exports to Bangladesh edged down 3%, reflecting the political unrest in the country. Export to Peru surged dropped over 100%.
100% man-made fibre yarns exports recovered in volume by 7% at 8.14 million kg, worth US$24.70 million, comprising 3.98 million kg of polyester yarn, 2.15 million kg of acrylic yarn and 1.97 million kg of viscose yarn.
Viscose yarn worth US$6.68 million or INR56 crore were exported at an average price of US$3.39 per kg in September. The major markets were Bangladesh followed by Sri Lanka and UAE. Polyester spun yarns worth US$8.54 million were exported at an average unit price of US$2.15 a kg. USA was the largest import-er of polyester yarn, followed by Brazil and Turkey.
Blended spun yarns export was worth US$44 million in September, including 11.2 million kg of PC yarns and 3.78 million kg of PV yarns. Brazil was the top importers of PC yarn from India followed by Bangladesh and Egypt while Turkey was the single largest importer of PV yarns from India followed distantly by Kenya and Iran.
According to official data, total textile and apparel exports were up 10% in September 2024. Shipments of RMG were up 17% while man-made yarn/ fabrics and made-ups rose 11%. Cotton Yarn/Fabrics/made-ups, handloom products etc were up 3.5%. Thus, total textile and apparel exports were at US$2.58 billion, accounting for 7.5% of all merchandised exports during the month. However, net exports were in deficit during the month. Cotton raw & waste and textile yarn, fabric, made up articles imports totaled US$2.78 billion, up 39% year on year.
