Polyester export rises at lower price levels in September

Polyester export including fibre, filament and 100% spun yarn, continued to decline despite a sharp decrease in export price.  In September, the total value of export were worth US$124 million. This comprised US$93 million worth of filaments, US$24 million worth of staple fibre and US$7 million worth of 100% spun yarns. During the first six months of 2019-20, export value aggregated US$777 million, down 11.5% compared to a year ago level.

Polyester filament yarn export shipment volume was at 62 million kg worth INR654 crore or US$93 million, at an average price realization of US$1.50 per kg. This included 45 million kg of DTYs worth US$67 million averaging a price realization of US$1.50 per kg. POY shipment was worth US$11.40 million with volumes at near 11 million kg. Both these were down 7-8% compared to the values a year ago. During the first six months of current fiscal year, filament worth US$567 million was exported as against US$654 million in the same period of 2018-19, implying a decline of 13%. Major market for polyester filament were Turley and Brazil which accounted for 48% of total export value during September.

Staple fibre

Polyester staple fibre export had exceeded cotton export in August and continued to be higher in September too in terms of volume. As prices crashed to their lowest in multiple months, shipment had picked up in August and the momentum could be sustained in September due to further plunge in prices. The average price realization was US$1.01 a kg during the month, while export volume increased 10% YoY. However, earnings declined 18% in similar comparison. During the month, 24 million kgs of staple polyester export was worth US$24 million or INR170 crore. USA, Indonesia, Bangladesh and Nepal were the major markets for polyester staple fibre accounting for almost 40% of total export value in September.

Spun yarn

Polyester spun yarns export in September was 3.1 million kg worth US$8.19 million. They were exported to 46 countries at average unit price of US$2.26 a kg, down US cents 14 from last month and US cents 24 from last year. Turkey was the largest importer of polyester yarn, followed distantly by USA and Brazil.
