Pakistan accounts for 6pc of India’s export of fibres and yarns – Part 2

Pakistan accounts for more than 6% of India’s export all kinds of textile fibres and yarns, and tanks third largest for cotton fibre and cotton yarns, 10th for other spun yarns, ninth for man-made fibres and 34th for filament yarns. Thus, Pakistan is among the top 10 markets for basic textiles exported for India.

On a monthly basis, fibre (including cotton) export to Pakistan averages US$24.5 million, spun yarns US$12.3 million and filaments US$0.4 million.

In fibre, Pakistan majorly imports cotton (US$23 million a month) and viscose staple fibre (US$1.3 million a month). In spun yarn, the single major is cotton yarn at an average of US$11.1 million a month, followed distantly by US$0.6 million worth of polyester/viscose yarn and US$0.3 million of polyester yarn.

In the first five month of 2017-18 marketing season, cotton export to Pakistan totaled 7.7 lakh bales worth US$238 million as against 6.9 lakh bales (US$201 million) in the corresponding months of 2016-17. There were no shipment reported in October. Unit prices realization has been much lower than global spot benchmark the Cotlook ‘A’ index in this season. Compared to local Shankar-6 spot prices, realization was almost closer initially but it rose sharply higher in February. January clocked peak shipment of 4.39 lakh bales at an average price of US cents 82.47 per pound as against Cotlook average of US cents 91.51 per pound and Shankar-6 at US cents 82.69 per pound.

Pakistan is also sixth largest market of Indian viscose staple fibre. On an average 6.7 lakh kgs of VSF is exported  worth US$1.35 million. However, the volume are not stable with maximum shipment recorded in the past two year is 1.7 million kgs (January 2017) and minimum of 60 thousand kgs (February 2018). Only on four occasions the volumes have crossed 1 million kgs in last 24 months.
